Who I am
My name is Emma Garcia-Delgado and I aim to obtain a future PhD in clinical psychology. I am currently pursuing my bachelors in psychology at Florida International University. My goal is to amend the rise of mental disorders that have emerged due to the hightening usage of social media and other technology alike. I believe that without proper research highlighting the possible negative effects, social media and future technologies may do more harm than good for the mental health of the citizens of the future. Growing up in between the before and start of the era of rapidly-changing technology, I saw the shift into the modern technological shift that slowly started to take over the world. My generation has some of the highest rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders. Now I believe the evolvement of technology has gone for the worst, as without internet restrictions and private companies taking over, the unlimited access to a virtual world has contributed to the mass loneliness and depression epidemic. I would like to thorougly further the research that undermines the effects of unrestricted access to these technologies that capture individuals' attention with social media. I aim to find not only the effects of a potential threat to our humanity, but I aim to find a balanced solution to prevent this threat from happening. I hope that a second-world country like India provides a good contrast between those that use social media and the effects of that usage compared to those that do not have access to social media.
